Repair Tool for Outlook Express - User Interface
|
Repair Tool for Outlook Express has a simple and straightforward one-window interface.
In the left part of the program window, there is a panel that allows you to select the DBX file you want
to recover (or Outlook Express folder, messages from which you want to undelete). The information in the
panel can be presented in the same form as in Outlook Express or as a tree of folders. Right above the panel,
there is a radio box with three elements:
-
Default Outlook Express folders - displays folders in the same manner as in Outlook Express
-
Select DBX source file manually - switches the panel to the folder tree mode
-
Search of DBX files - allows to search for DBX files automatically
Right above the message list there are two tabs that toggle the program’s work modes. If the "Regular messages"
tab is selected, the program is in the mode of extracting messages from corrupted Outlook Express folders.
If the "Recently deleted" tab is selected, the program works in the mode of recovering recently deleted messages.
The list contains all messages that the program has found during scanning the file and that can be repaired.
Options:
-
Use the in-depth scanning mode - this feature sometimes helps to recover highly damaged messages that
cannot be repaired otherwise
-
Process all folders in the current Identity at once - allows you to recover messages
from all folders in the current Identity at once, a separate subfolder is created on the disk for
each OE folder
-
Rename *.eml files - If selected, recovered message files will be renamed in the manner you select
-
Put files in separate folders - If selected, recovered message files will be put in the
corresponding subfolders
-
Open the folder containing the recovered messages - If selected, the Windows Explorer window
with the folder where recovered messages are saved will be opened after the recovery process is finished

How it works.
Repair Tool for Outlook
Express scans DBX files and finds e-mail messages stored in them. Each message it finds is saved
to a separate file with the EML extension in the folder you specify. These saved EML files are of
a universal format and can be easily imported into Outlook Express.
To extract messages from a DBX file, do the following:
-
Click the 'Regular messages' tab (if it's not active yet) to switch to the mode of repairing corrupted Outlook Express folders
-
Select the necessary file or folder in the left part of the window
-
Use the "Output folder" field to specify the folder where you want to save recovered messages
-
Click the "Recover" button
To import recovered messages into Outlook Express:
-
Open the folder with the saved EML files in Windows Explorer
-
Start Outlook Express and just use drag and drop to move these EML files to the necessary Outlook Express
folder. (Hint: Press Ctrl+A to select all the files in the Windows Explorer window.)

Recovering recently deleted Outlook Express messages
|
How it works.
When you delete a message from an Outlook Express folder, it is not actually deleted, but only marked as deleted. Such a
message, marked as deleted, stays in the Outlook Express folder until a new message is written to the location it occupies
or until the user compacts the folder. Nevertheless, part of information is lost permanently when you delete
an Outlook Express message. That is why it is often impossible to recover files attached to e-mail message since they have
a complicated format.
To recover recently deleted messages, do the following:
-
Click the "Recently deleted" tab (if it's not active yet) to switch to the mode of repairing recently or accidentally deleted messages
-
Select the necessary file or folder in the left part of the window
-
Use the "Output folder" field to specify the folder where you want to save recovered messages
-
Click the "Recover" button. Each message will be saved as a file with the EML extension. To open such
a file, double-click it. You may fail to open some files with a double click. You can try to open them
with the help of a text editor to extract at least some useful information (e.g. the sender's address).
The last step is importing EML files into an Outlook Express folder. It is even simpler. Just drag and drop
files from the Windows folder into the Outlook Express folder.
